Really wish I wasn't working tomorrow. Why? Because I want to go see Return of the King again. It was AMAZING. Beautiful, haunting, frightening, bittersweet, and just one of the most wonderful movies I've ever seen. There aren't enough words in the world to describe it. Sooooo... if you haven't seen it yet (which, btw, means you should go NOW), don't follow the cut.
They kept my ending! They kept my ending! This, to me, was the most wonderful part. Because it's such a perfect ending in the books... the 3 hobbits seeing Frodo, Gandalf and the Elves off, and Sam returning home to the Shire: "Well, I'm back." Just thinking about it makes me cry.
Other things I loved (in completely random order):
Sam. Sean Astin was amazing. Okay, everyone was awesome, but Sean definitely stood out for me.
Eowyn and Merry defeating the Witch King of Angmar. Dude. Freaking AWESOME. So so so happy this was kept. "I am no man."
Super crazy Denethor. Scary dude. Much crazier than I imagined. Loved Faramir though. I wanted to hug him so badly. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the romance of Eowyn/Faramir developed in the Extended Edition, but I can see that it wouldn't have fit into this cut.
Shelob. Eeeeeeee! That was one scary looking spider. Go Weta Digital!
Paths of Dead. Again with the excellent job of scary. Beautifully done.
The usage of both Billy Boyd and Viggo Mortensen in two songs for the movies. Both were beautiful and very fitting.
Aragorn/Arwen. Some people have complained about how the relationship was developed moreso in the three movies than in the books, but I think it works for the movies. You needed the development to explain why Aragorn doesn't return Eowyn's love and the coronation with the arrival of Arwen wouldn't have been that powerful without the development. So whatever to the naysayers.
"That still only counts as one!" Hehehehe. More battle counts make for fun times. I love Gimli and Legolas.
Opening prologue. Hey... how proud am I of myself? I knew they had filmed this scene, but had no idea where it would be used. This morning, as I was trying to figure out what they'd be using to open the movie, I thought to myself "I bet it will be that scene!" So, go me! Andy Serkis kicks ass. 'Nuff said.
My hobbits. I love my hobbits. All four of them - Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin. Merry and Pippin kicked major ass in battle and my boys, Frodo and Sam, kept going until the end. Siiiiiiiiigh. So lovely.
Howard Shore. I love this man. No one else could have created such beautiful and fitting music for these three amazing movies. The movies would not carry as much emotion as they do without Howard's scores.
Peter Jackson. "My precious!" Susan and I are so moving in with PJ. He is a GOD. If he doesn't win Best Director, then it will be certain that the Academy is on crack. And lots of it.
Speaking of that. If this movie doesn't win Best Picture, I will be boycotting the Oscars till the end of my days. Yeah, you heard me! And those of you who know me well, know that the Oscars are big deal in my house. So me boycotting? Serious stuff. I've said it here, and I am sticking to it. So Oscar voters? VOTE FOR RETURN OF THE KING!!!!
Ahem. So, that's it from me peoples. I know there's more to say about this gorgeous movie, but my head is so full of thoughts that I can't sort through all of them, and it will have to wait till later. I'll be seeing RotK again on Sunday, so I'm sure there will be more after that. For now, I need to sleep and dream of hobbits, elves, wizards, men, ents, oliphaunts, and maybe even a few orcs.
